The Freemasons may be a good place to start when looking into symbolism from history as they have become popular through the "Da Vinci Code" book and film. The book deals with a set of symbols which they follow to the end. I do not know how accurate they are though so I would just use this as a basis to my research if I went down that route.
I also remembered that Bath's "The Circus" and "Royal Crescent" are built as they are because the architect was (I think) a druid and it was to represent the sun and the moon. The very centre of "The Circus" is where to lines of druid power meet.
